Worship Team

"Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness." - Psalm 22:9 (NIV)

"In the process of being worshiped… God communicates his presence to men." – C. S. Lewis

One of the primary roles of the weekend for The Worship Team is to lead people into God's presence.

The Worship Team provides the music for the entire weekend – both inside and outside of the conference room – and for the Saturday night worship service.

As a praise and worship leader you carefully choose the music and lyrics to build the body of Christ. Your responsible for the flow of the service, the mood and readiness of the Brothers to hear God's word spoken through the speakers

The highest goal is to recognize, create, and amplify a culture of worship to the Souly Business weekend.

The two tabs below provide information about the Worship Team. "WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING" explores the skills needed for the role, and "HOW TO SERVE" will help prepare your heart for the role.

What you will be doing

What you will be doing

Below are some practical thoughts and guidelines for the Worship Leader and Worship Team.

  • Prior to and during a weekend

    • Worship team usually gets to the venue 3-4 hours early to set up and perform a sound check prior to any of the Brothers arriving.
    • Worship team makes sure AV team has either the power point slide or the words to put into their software prior to the event or early that morning.
    • Meet with the production team about music (prior to the weekend if possible).
    • Discuss leadership’s expectations for praise and worship on the weekend and take their thoughts and insights into consideration.
    • Review the agenda with leadership to determine when praise and worship times will occur both inside of and outside of the conference room during the weekend.
    • Review the topics for the talks in advance; check with the speakers for any special music which may be desired prior to a given talk.
    • Choose a balance of songs, mixing traditional and contemporary as the Spirit leads.  Ensure that there is a mix of songs that will speak to the variety and diversity of the backgrounds of the brothers and team members who will be present.
    • Select music in advance and be ready to begin whenever asked by leadership.
    • Prepare all music for the weekend for PowerPoint presentation.  Coordinate with the audio-visual team servant to use the appropriate PowerPoint format or whatever format they desire you use.
  • Other Times of Worship

    • Be prepared for the Saturday evening and Sunday Communion services.
    • Consult with the Spiritual Director to determine music selection, positioning of music in the service and if there is to be singing or music during sharing of the elements.
    • Worship team plays background music during the cross ceremony and leads the entire group in corporate worship after the speaker finishes.
    • Someone on the worship team plays during communion at the end of the weekend.

Feel free to download a list of songs that have been played at earlier Souly retreats.  This is provided to give you a sense of the songs we have played in the past, not to dictate your song selection.

How to Serve

How to Serve

The heart of the men and the heart of the worship team is vital for the weekend. Coming prepared in your own heart is important. Spend time in the Word before you lead worship, spend time in prayer for the men and the event and any promptings God may want to share with you.

Your heart, your love and encouragement to the men is vital for a great worship time.

  • Preparing and sharing your heart during the weekend.

    • The worship team usually prays together and with one or two of the retreat leaders prior to beginning the weekend.
    • The worship team can and should share, as led by God, personal stories or revelations prior to or after a song if it ties in with the song and makes it more impactful or if it is relevant to the topic of the next talk.
    • We encourage the worship team to stay connected during the weekend, enjoy the speakers and set time aside to hear from God.
    • Above all, remember that the job of the Worship Leader and other musicians is NOT TO PERFORM, but to lead group singing, humbly serving the brothers and the team throughout the weekend in a joyful expression of God’s love.
    • Be sensitive to the working of the Holy Spirit and the resulting mood as the weekend evolves and progresses. Know when a specific genre of song is appropriate – for fun, praise, prayer or meditation.
  • MOST IMPORTANTLY, love on the brothers and the team during the weekend!
