Shepherd

"Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work." - Oswald Chambers

"The prayer of a righteous man availeth much." - James 5;16 (NKJV)

The role of the Shepherd is to coordinate the retreat speakers and speaker prayer "volunteers" so that each speaker is prayed over prior to and after their talk.

The role also insures that each speaker has sufficient microphone hook-ups and ready to give their talk.

The Shepherd escorts the speaker up front and back to the prayer room after their talk.

The two tabs below provide information about the Shepherd. "WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING" explores the skills needed for the role, and "HOW TO SERVE" will help prepare your heart for the role.

Shepherd Time Sheet

What you will be doing

What you will be doing

The Shepherd role coordinates prayer for the speakers before and after they talk along with two Host team volunteers (one Meal Servant and one Table Servant).

  • If you are a host team member praying for one of the speakers

    • You will be with one and possibly more prayer partners during the prayer time.
    • Pray briefly for the speaker just before they speak and just after.
    • Spend the entire time the speaker is speaking in prayer or perhaps reading scripture that will encourage the speaker as he talks.
    • Pray silently or out loud with your prayer team.
    • You will be in a prayer room during this time.
    • There will be a prayer guide for you to use that provides suggestions on what to pray.
  • Preparation for Escort Role

    • Coordinate with production team to obtain mic at the beginning of retreat; change out the batteries and return after last speaker on Sunday.
    • Ensure you know how to use the wireless mic and how to minimize noise from the mic from the speakers clothing and gestures.
    • Keep up with the agenda and coordinate start-times with the retreat director so you are able to get prayers and speakers to the prayer room on time.
    • Stock prayer room with water and tissues.
  • Secure People to Pray for Speakers

    • You will sign up people to pray from kitchen crew first...it's best to coordinate with Kitchen leader to incorporate in his kick off meeting.
    • You will sign up table servant team members to pray at the beginning of valet parking duty.
  • Ensure Timing is Kept on Track

    • Remind speakers and prayers that are praying after meals to eat first/quickly.
    • Touch base with people the night before who will be praying the next day after breakfast.
    • You will get the two volunteers to the prayer room ~20 minutes before the speaker speaks.  Exception would be Sunday morning as we normally pray up the speaker before group share time.
  • Before Praying for the Speaker

    • You will share with them the important role of praying for the speaker.
    • You will help each speaker get their microphone on.
    • You will give the prayer team a list of topics to pray on if they need it.
  • Praying for the Speakers

    • Once everyone is in the prayer room you will comfort/encourage everyone and ask the speaker what he has on his mind/heart and for his prayer request.
    • When an initial prayer (everyone prays) is complete, escort the speaker to the conference room during the worship set so he can participate in the worship set.
  • During and After the Speaker's Talk

    • Sit near the speaker prior to and during his talk in case he needs anything such as water, coffee, etc.
    • After the speaker's talk, you will escort the speaker back to the prayer room when they are finished.
    • Lead the team in a prayer (everyone prays) for the speaker again comforting, encouraging, celebrating, etc.
    • Remove speaker's microphone.

How to Serve

How to Serve

Serving with excellence and a heart of grace makes this role effective. Thoughts on how to love and care for the speakers:

  • It’s important for this role to be aware of the time/agenda so that the speaker gets prayed for before they speak prior to the music starting.
  • It’s important to be in a good place spiritually yourself, as you’ll be leading prayer for the speakers.
  • Get prayed up by some other host team members, spiritual director, etc.
  • You can encourage the speaker that he will do a great job as he follows the Lord.
